摘要:This study investigated conventional drying (CD) and superheated steam drying (SD) for simultaneous resin fixation and drying of radiata pine heartwood and sapwood. The effects of CD and SD on the drying quality (moisture content and its distribution, residual stress, and distortion), deresination, physical, and mechanical properties of wood were comparatively analyzed. The results show that both CD and SD produced dried heartwood and sapwood boards with the drying quality indicators meeting the grade 2 and above requirements in GB/T 6491-2012, with SD achieving faster drying rates. Both methods remarkably reduced the resin content (RC) of heartwood and sapwood, showing higher deresination rates in latewood (vs. earlywood) and core layer (vs. outer layer). After heating tests at 60 degrees C, no resin exudation was observed on the surfaces of the core and outer layer of CD- and SD-dried wood, indicating effective fixation of residual resin in the dried wood. Compared to the air-dried controls, SD induced greater color changes than CD, while both SD and CD improved dimensional stability, water absorption, and mechanical properties of heartwood and sapwood. The CD and SD methods adopted in this study can serve as effective integrated deresination and drying processes for radiata pine wood.
