Abstract The tropical forests in China are located on the north border of TropicalZone. At present, the well-preserved and largesized natural tropical forests are limitedto Haina Island and South Yunnan, with an area approximating l. 3 miilion ha.Protec-tion of such type forests began in 1950s. Since 1980s, the government formulated andimplemented the policy concerning the establishment of tropical forests that must be ob-served with emphasis on 'their protection, rehabilitation and development'. In accor-dance with this policy for protection and development of tropical forests resources to amaximal extent , the central and local governments adopted a series of concrete policiesand measures ,such as establishment of tropical forest nature reserves, implementationof a financial support policy to improve the livelihood of the local inhabitants ,reductionof felling volume in the natural tropical forests, enforcing sustainable management oftropical forests, and establishment of plantations with all efforts. The author makes anintroduction to the current wood production, consumption, processing and utilization ofthe tropical forest in China,An outlook on future management objectives , development, processing and utilization of these forests is also made.
