摘要:The mechanism of wood fracture under bend loading is significant both for understanding wooden structural member failure and for predicting the strength of wooden structural members. This paper uses an in situ three-point bending test and atomic force microscopy to understand softwood bend fracture initiation and crack propagation at the scales of the growth ring and individual cells. The results revealed that the initial fracture crack occurred in the outermost layer of the tensile portion, which was related to the orientation of the wood rays, and then, the crack propagated in a zigzag manner. For the tangential loading fracture specimens, the latewood (LW) fracture types from the tensile part to the neutral layer were primarily intrawall in the S1/S2 interface, transverse transwall and longitudinal transwall, and the earlywood (EW) fracture type was longitudinal transwall. For the radially loaded specimens, the fracture types of LW tracheids of the tensile part were mainly transverse and longitudinal transwall. Additionally, the fracture type of the EW tracheids from the tensile part to the neutral layer was transverse transwall breakage.
