摘要:Urban forests and green spaces provide crucial and sustainable benefits for human beings under climate change and rapid worldwide urbanization. Urban forestry as a discipline initially emerged in North America during the 1960s, building on earlier experiences with tree and green space establishment and management from both North America and Europe. Urban forestry in China has recently made great efforts and developed rapidly, incorporating some fundamental principles and adopting several emerging techniques that would inspire urban forest researchers, decision-makers, and managers in other countries or regions. Firstly, this paper concisely reviewed previous progresses of the three Bay Areas and urban forestry thereby across the world, including New York, San Francisco and Tokyo. Secondly, we demonstrated the significant advances of urbanization and urban forestry in China, focusing on the three national-level urban agglomerations (the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region in northern China, the Yangtze River Delta in eastern China, and the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in southern China). We are mainly concerned information with GDP, population, urbanization rate, forest coverage and relevant publications. Thirdly, ready to be the fourth world-class Bay Area in China, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area developed based on the PRD (i.e., nine cities in Guangdong Province) and included Hong Kong and Macao. Last, we raise several major challenges and possible future directions. "China’s Mode" of urban forest construction benefits the larger Asia-Pacific region and helps to achieve UN’s SDGs. Although the Chinese approach to urban forestry is unique in its scope and approach, there are similarities with initiatives elsewhere. ? 2025 The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
