A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the changes in leaf color and the vegetation restoration potential of Quercus spp.in Pb/Zn tailings.Seedlings of Quercus fabri,Q.virginiana,Q.michauxii,Q.pagoda,and Q.phellos were grown in red soil and Pb/Zn mine tailings for 4 months, and their biomasses;chromatic aberration parameters(L^(*),a^(*),and b^(*));chlorophyll content indices(CCIs);pigments;and N,P,K,and heavy metal concentrations were compared. The results showed that all the seedlings could survive on the Pb/Zn tailings, and no notable toxicity symptoms were observed, indicating that the five Quercus species had strong adaptability to Pb/Zn tailings. The biomass decreased to different degrees in all tested species compared to the control and notably,Q.michauxii p erformed well.T he C CI value of t he l eaves d ecreased g radually w ith growth time, and the rate of decline in the CCI value in the seedlings grown in Pb/Zn tailings was significantly higher than that in the red soil.Quercus pagoda exhibited the highest rate of decline in the CCI.Overall, the values of L^(*),a^(*),b^(*),and anthocyanin content of leaves in the treatment group increased compared to the control, whereas chlorophyll and carotenoid content decreased.Concurrently, leaf discoloration of Quercus spp.in the Pb/Zn tailings occurred earlier than that of the control.Overall, leaf color differed notably among the different trees. The concentrations of N,P,and K in the leaves were significantly lower in the Pb/Zn tailings than those in the control. The concentrations of heavy metals in the different organs of Quercus spp.were 5.42–49.50(Cu),52.67–483.33(Zn),5.96–117.00(Pb),and 0.26–10.03 mg/kg(Cd),and the values of bioconcentration factor(BCF)and translocation factor(TF)were<1.The Cd concentrations in the leaves, stems, and roots of Q.pagoda were 10.03,9.66,and 9.08 mg/kg,respectively,which were significantly higher than those of the other species, and the TF value was 1.08.Correlation analysis showed that the aberration parameters were positively correlated with the leaf heavy metals concentrations, especially the a^(*)value was significantly positively correlated with Cu and Cd concentrations.Further, the a^(*)value was significantly negatively correlated with N,P,and K concentrations. These results demonstrate that Quercus spp.have high tolerance and good landscape effects with low BCF and TF,implying that they are potential candidates for vegetation restoration in Pb/Zn tailing areas.
