Four different forest types in Xiaokeng forestry farm, Nanling mountains, South China, were investigated and some soil samples were obtained with a simple sampling method from the four forest types. The amount of soil microbes, including bacteria, epiphytes and actinomyces in the forest types, was analyzed with microculture plate dilution method. The results show as follows. (1) There was significant difference in soil microbial amounts among the different forest types (p= 0. 001). They were ranked according to soil microbial amounts as the mixed broadleaf-conifer forest ((40. 5±13.4)×10^5CFU·g^-1)〉the evergreen broad-leaved forest ((30.2±11.0)×10^5CFU·g^-1)〉 the moso bamboo (phyllostachys heterocycla pubescens) forest ((27.9±8. 1)×10^5CFU·g^-1)〉 the Chinese fir (Cunningiamia lanceolata) plantation ((17. 9±5. 8)×10^5CFU·g^-1). (2) The percentage composition of soil micorbes varied with different stands. The amount of soil becteria accounted for the majority of the total amount of soil microbes with an average of 74.6% while the amounts of soil actinomycetes and epiphyte were in the minority, with an average of 13. 9% and 11.5 %, respectively. (3) The amounts of soil microbes and its percentage composition show an obvious change even in the same forest stand.
