摘要:Heartwood has the ability to accumulate a considerable amount of secondary metabolites, which result in excellent mechanical strength, gorgeous color, and inherent longevity. The timber belonging to Toona sinensis is a popular plant because of the beautiful reddish-brown surface color of its heartwood. We used targeted metabolomics to identify the metabolites of T. sinensis to investigate the differences in the xylem composition. A total of 772 secondary metabolites were found, including 102 flavonoids, 100 amino acids and their derivatives, and 147 phenolic acids. The 6-year-old heartwood (6YH) has considerably different secondary metabolites than prior years. Moreover, two crucial pathways in 6YH were shown to be flavone and flavonol biosynthesis as well as flavonoid biosynthesis. Flavonoids and anthocyanins were considerably more abundant in 6YH. In the meantime, heartwood has a high concentration of flavonoid functional groups. In 6YH, the isoflavone and flavonol components showed a considerable increase, but in the 6-year-old sapwood (6YS), there was a substantial drop. The concentration of epicatechin and catechin in 6YH was as high as 9684 mg/kg and 2482 mg/kg, respectively. Most flavonoids were concentrated close to the xylem vessels, and early wood had more flavonoids than late wood. Our findings can provide a starting point for future research on heartwood extracts of T. sinensis and guidance for the creation and application of T. sinensis heartwood. ? 2024, The Authors.
