Saiga antelope(Saiga tatarica), an endangered animal in the world, has been extinct in China since 1960 s in the last century. For its population restoration Gansu Endangered Animal Protection Center of National Forestry Bureau introduced several adults from Russia to artificial feed since 1970 s. Until now the individual numbers of the population already reach to 110. Dongshawo Region was historical distribution area of Saiga antelope. The potential habitat evaluation of Saiga antelope which based on the behavior observation of semi-free population and the date analysis of vegetation and terrain of study area will provide scientific basis for its reintroduction. The results showed that if not considering human activities, the area of highly suitable and suitable habitats were 30.87 km2 and 23.25 km2. Accounting for 31.076% and 23.404% of total area investigated, respectively. In the presence of impacts of human activities, highly suitable and suitable habitat decreased by 4.903% and 3.268% respectively. This showed that the effect extent of human activities was small and Dongshawo Region was suitable potential habitat for Saiga antelope. To further improve survival rate of reintroduction of Saiga antelope, we suggest establishing a habitat corridor, strengthening habitat rehabilitation and protection, and increasing water and feedstuff supplement in breeding season and winter.
