摘要:Study region: The Source Region of the Yellow River and the Zoige peatland, a vital hydrological and ecological area on the eastern Tibetan Plateau, ChinaStudy focus: We evaluated the hydrological impacts of ecological restoration efforts initiated since the 1990s, targeting wetland shrinkage and ecological degradation. Using the Budyko framework, runoff variations in three sub-catchments (JM-up, JM-MQ, and MQ-TNH) were attributed to climate change and human activities before and after 1989.New hydrological insights for the region: Annual runoff has declined significantly since the 1990s, particularly in the JM-MQ sub-catchment, despite increased precipitation. Ecological restoration contributed to 79%–85% of runoff reductions, with decreases of 38.9% and 24.1% in the Black and White River areas, respectively. Restoration improved evapotranspiration, soil water storage, and groundwater levels, enhancing the Zoige wetland’s water retention. These findings underscore the dual role of ecological restoration in reducing runoff while strengthening wetland sustainability, offering critical insights for optimizing restoration strategies to balance water resources and ecological resilience under future climatic shifts. ? 2025, The Authors.
