摘要:The sensilla on antennae and mouthparts are critical in chemical and physical communication, which is crucial for understanding the behavioral diversity of insects, such as host selection, feeding, mate finding, and oviposition. Ips nitidus Eggers (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a phloem-feeding herbivore in spruce forests from the Tibetan Plateau region in China, causing serious damage to local spruce forests. Herein, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), we observed for the first time the morphological structures of the antennae and mouthparts of I. nitidus. We analyzed the types, morphological features, distribution, and numbers of different sensilla on the antennae and mouthparts. We observed five types of antennal sensilla, including sensilla trichodea (S.t.1–3), sensilla chaetica (S.c.1–2), sensilla basiconica (S.b.1–2), sensilla coeloconica (S.co), and B?hm bristle (B.b.). We also observed five types of mouthpart sensilla, including sensilla trichoidea (Str. 1–3), sensilla chaetica (Sch.1–3), sensilla basiconica (Sba.1–2), sensilla twig basiconica (Stb.1–3), and sensilla digitiformia (Sdi.) in male and female I. nitidus. There were minor differences in length and number between the sexes among some types of sensilla, but there was no sexual dimorphism in the type and distribution of sensilla. Additionally, we discuss the potential functional roles these sensilla based on their structural characteristics and distribution patterns. These results are important for future studies related to the olfactory and gustatory features of I. nitidus. ? 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.
